Geschichte:

1886 wurde in Witwatersrand Gold gefunden, wodurch sich viele Bergbauunternehmen und Finanzdienstleister gründeten. Dadurch wurde bald der Bedarf für eine Börse in Südafrika laut. Die Johannesburg Stock Exchange ging aus der, am 8. November 1887 von dem Londoner Benjamin Minors Woollan gegründeten Johannesburg Exchange & Chambers Company hervor. Die Börse hatte aus Gründen des Platzmangels des öfteren einen Standortwechsel. Im Jahr 1963 wurde sie Mitglied der Federal International Bourses de Valeurs. Heute trägt sie den Namen Johannesburg Securities Exchange und gehört zu den zehn größten Börsen der Welt. In Afrika ist sie die größte Börse.
